About Us

What Makes Our Bunnies Unique?

Private Boutique Rabbitry

Our bunnies come from lines that have been carefully outcrossed and cultivated for years to provide stronger health outcomes, affectionate temperaments, and coat color varieties that are not normally available in purebred Netherland Dwarves. We hyper-select in our stock for personality and health, as we believe these are the two most impactful factors affecting the quality of life of both pet and pet owner.

Of course, that doesn’t mean we’ve sacrificed on the iconic cuteness of the Netherland Dwarf. Some of our bunnies are absolutely tiny, coming in at under 2lbs at adult growth, with average adult sizes between 2-2lbs. Our line features big, bold eyes, chubby cheeks, and wide open ears. Our bunnies’ adult coats tend to mature around 12-18months, providing them the iconic chubby, plush features the Netherland Dwarf breed is known for.

We produce Netherlands in almost all color varieties, which you can learn more about on the Our Program page. Our lines are free from malocclusion of the teeth and splay leg, and display robust health with no issues of infectious illness within the herd.

In addition to offering our purebred lines, we produce half-Netherland and 3/4-Netherland mixes. Outcrossed several generations back with Mini Rex and Dutch lines (separately), our mixes remain dwarf-sized with soft, plush coats. In fact, one of the smallest bunnies in our herd is a half Nethie/Dutch mix.

This line produces beautiful, tiny rabbits with a more sleek, less rounded physique and face. Still featuring massive eyes and shortened ears that give them a classic baby face, these bunnies will display finer, more delicate bone structure and a ‘teardrop’ shaped profile with rounded heads and tiny, slightly pointed noses. The have the same upright posture and luxurious coat that Netherland Dwarves feature.

Who We Are

Private Boutique Rabbitry

Honey Bunnies OC is a small, private rabbitry based in Orange County, California. Our rabbits are much-loved pets which we play and interact with every day. Each bunny born at Honey Bunnies OC is gently hand-reared alongside of its mother and siblings.

We offer our bunnies ample time and space to roam and play, including them in our day-to-day lives, and ensure social interaction that primes them for the most common environmental factors that rabbits experience as pets. This includes general care and handling, such as being picked up and carried, having their nails trimmed, and exposure to both indoor and back yard environments.

Our bunnies are socialized alongside of children, adult friends and family, other bunnies, dogs, and cats so that appropriate and safe contact with the members of their future families will not cause them undue stress, no matter who they share their forever home with.

Our Purpose

Health > Temperament > Type

At Honey Bunnies OC, we are eager to share with others what fantastic pets and companions rabbits make. They are highly intelligent animals that form strong bonds with their owners and have the potential to bring joy to people in all sorts of living arrangements. We aim educate others about rabbit ownership and the type of care needed to your bunny happy and healthy.

Our goal is for each bunny to find their forever home, so we go to great lengths to interact with our bunnies in ways that will help them easily meld into their lives as human companions. Bunnies have massive personalities that seem to be often overlooked or unknown to people and we want to change that! They are trainable, curious (and brave!), playful, and affectionate and have a great deal more to offer than just sitting around in a hutch all day.

We believe that the more people know about this fantastic little animal, the more they will want to engage with them. Of course this benefits all the little bunnies out there looking for their future homes, but it also has the potential to bring a lot of joy to people; especially those for whom a more common house pet – like a dog or cat – is not a viable option. Pet ownership is well-documented to have a profoundly positive effect on mental health and we believe having loving connections with animal family members is so very important, with even more far-reaching benefits and outcomes than are easily measured in polls and studies.

Have You Considered Adopting From A Shelter?

Every bunny deserves a home

While adopting a baby bunny is an excellent choice to become a rabbit owner, there are other pathways to become a bunny owner as well. We encourage you to check your local shelter listings for available bunnies, as well as those of your local rabbit rescue, where you may find bunnies of all breeds and colors waiting for their forever homes. Honey Bunnies OC offers a home for all of the rabbits it produces and when available, also offers adult bunnies, strays, and rescues for rehoming to hopeful forever families.

Rabbits are incredibly bright and very social creatures. Many people don’t realize that owning one is similar to the care commitment of owning a cat or dog, but they also don’t realize that the relationship they can enjoy with their rabbit is similar to level of interaction and bonding many pet owners share with their dogs and cats. This misunderstanding is perhaps the most common reason that bunnies end up in shelters, and in fact in 2024 the most commonly stated reason for surrendering their rabbit was due to “an inability to care for the rabbit, or the lack of interest in doing so”.

There are considerably less rabbits in shelters than dogs and cats, and rabbits enjoy a much higher readoption rate as well. This is encouraging, but that doesn’t mean that shelter bunnies should be overlooked; there are still so many that need loving homes to retire to.
– While there were roughly 11,000 rabbits that were surrendered to shelters in 2024, over 9,000 rabbits were adopted in 2024. (Source: Shelter Animals Count Annual Reporting)
– Meanwhile, roughly 2.9 million dogs and 2.9 million cats entered shelters in 2024 with about 2 million dogs and 2.2 million cats being adopted into homes. Additionally, roughly 550,000 dogs were reuinted with their original owners rather than being adopted, as well as roughly 360,000 cats. (Source: ASPCA 2024 U.S. Animal Shelter Statistics)

There are numerous rabbit rescues and organizations working hard to ensure that fewer bunnies end up in shelters each year, and that more of those that do find their way back out of the shelter and into loving forever homes. If you think adoption could be a good fit for you, we encourage you to pursue this path. If you would like to adopt and are having trouble finding available bunnies or adoption services in your area, please don’t hesitate to reach out and ask for help on our contact form.
